Science of Dreams 

Until recent scientific realizations, most people thought of sleep as a passive activity the human body cycles through daily. We now know sleep affects our daily function, physical health, and mental health in many ways. The quality of sleep determines the quality of life, and most people today simply don’t experience quality sleep. Too much noise, light, distraction, daily eating habits, stress, medicines, air pollution are all factors with various effects on the body’s sleep patterns. These distractions keep the body from diving into deep sleep, and R.E.M. sleep, where science tells us dreams occur. These stages of sleep are also where the body experiences the most benefit.

The importance of deep sleep

Sleep is how the human body recharges and recovers from our daily exertions, and ultimately refreshes both the mind and body. Science shows sleep is necessary for survival, and deep sleep coincides with the release of growth hormone in children and young adults. According to the American Sleep Association,

“Many of the body’s cells also show increased production and reduced breakdown of proteins during deep sleep. Since proteins are the building blocks needed for cell growth and for repair of damage from factors like stress and ultraviolet rays, deep sleep may truly be “beauty sleep.” Activity in parts of the brain that control emotions, decision-making processes, and social interactions is drastically reduced during deep sleep, suggesting that this type of sleep may help people maintain optimal emotional and social functioning while they are awake.”
